Robin over at The Dancing Goats has generously sent in several spindles for us. While, we will be dropping some some of these lovlies in unsuspecting November box recipients,this one is up for grabs as a giveaway!
This is handmade with love from antique furniture. He says that they're a little heavy but they will be great for plying.

ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of The Dancing Goats!! My first success with a drop spindle was one he made from an old cabinet leg:). If any one gets a chance to take his Spindles around the world class or broom making class you will not be disappointed. I scrolled through all his lovelies in shop and I love the walnut spindle bowl that has the constellation of Draco !!

ReplyDeleteOh gosh, the spindles with the Celtic stone whorls! Like spinning with a piece of actual history. I also love the spindles made from old bits of furniture. I love that he's taking things someone else might have thrown out and making beautiful tools for spinners to use.
ReplyDeleteI just looked at the retreat page and realized they're in my home state. Most retreat places are too far away for me to even think about! I don't know which class I would like best (maybe dyeing?), but I definitely need to save up for one.

ReplyDeleteI have never been able to go past the Tibetan Spindles of the Dead that Dancing Goats produces, who could knock twirling skulls on your spindle? The "Holly and Walnut / Tibetan Spindle of the Dead / Support Spindle and Matching Bowl" currently listed is a really nice looking matched combo.
ReplyDeleteThe retreat looks like somewhere I'd just like to spindle spin while out walking or while talking in good company :). Of the classes the spindle making & then the how to Tibetan spin or the dying class are most attractive to me.

The is nothing like know your item has a story, wondering who used it before, and what they used it for. It's a chance to see and connect with the past

And would there be fireflies? The only thing I remember about my childhood visit to Illinois was the fireflies. A Re-Treat at Dancing Goats would be a Real-Treat!

ReplyDeleteThe rustic cedar root spinning bowl takes my breath away. Actually, the entire site takes my breath away, but there's something about that piece more than the others. I'm just learning to spin (just ordered a Honeybee wheel) and I think I'd learn spindle spinning just to use that bowl.
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I just looked at the retreats. It's hard to say which interests me the most. Juggling definitely caught my eye, as did all the spinning sessions. I couldn't figure out where they are, but I think I'd like very much to go next time I do a non-family vacation.

Right on the first page I saw the Winland Jewelry Box, which, being jewel-less I loved, but felt I didn't need. Then I realized all the lovely spindles and spindle bowls were like jewels, so that's what I'd put in the box! KittenWhiplash on Rav.
ReplyDeleteThe reatreats are only about 50 - 60 miles from where Mom grew up in the 1920s and 30s. A place like this would be have been another wonderful reason to travel back to the area with her, but at her age and health I'm afraid it's out of the question. KittenWhiplash on Rav
ReplyDeleteOk - the spindles are lovely, BUT I am rather partial to the little gnomes/tree spirit guys! The one with the thrums in the cap is hilarious! They are pretty great - would love a couple tucked into the christmas green!
