Cool Climates interveiw with Rachel Suntop and *Giveaway*

Describe Cool Climates.
I am drawn to northern (cool) places, such as Iceland and Alaska. Although I hate the cold, I'm drawn to these places for the beautiful landscapes and interesting cultures. Many of my yarns and fiber art are directly inspired by these places.

Tell us how you've come to be a fiber artist.
When I was 5, my mom taught me how to sew on a sewing machine. When I was 6, I learned to knit through a babysitter. I got hooked and throughout my childhood, I knit, sewed doll clothes, did embroidery and other craft projects. My interest has continued until this day.

What inspires your creative use of colors and textures?
Many are inspired by places I've traveled or geographical places I'm intrigued with. I'm very drawn to nature and use the colors I find in natural settings. I'm also inspired by cities and culture, and will make yarns that are inspired by those. I also like to use people (mainly celebrities) as an inspiration. I will spin a skein of yarn that "represents" that person, through physical appearance, behavior and interests. Lastly, I'm just attracted to colors and will just throw some together to make an interesting new color combination.

Do you have any spinning mentors? If so, whom?
I don't know a lot of them, but I really like Lexi Borger of "intertwined". I also have been really inspired by some of the other artists in the Phat Fiber club and artists in the Novelty Yarn and Fiber Friday groups.

Tell us about your favorite yarn.
Hard to say, but I really like the "Garden of Earthly Delights" yarn I spun recently, inspired by Heironymous Bosch's painting. I feel that I really captured the mood of the painting, both in the colors and texture (and objects).

Describe for us, the least favorite yarn you've spun.
There are several of those, mainly the first yarns I spun on the spinning wheel. Some of them are just plain ugly. Whereas others are interesting in their own way and I'm combining them with other yarns to make interesting yarns.

Do you listen to music while spinning? If so, what is your spinning soundtrack?
I almost always listen to music while spinning. I listen to all kinds of stuff: David Bowie, Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Antony and the Johnsons, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Varttina, Sigur Ros and U2 to name a few.

Your yarns are distinctively textural- describe the process you use to create them. Do you plan it out first and then sit down to spin?
Usually, I just create the textures as I spin, it's an impulse or an intuition. Sometimes I will plan to have certain textural elements before I spin the yarn, but I almost never think about it in depth. I will just create them in the moment of spinning, as I experience the yarn being made.

Which of your current creations for sale is your favorite?
Probably my Gamla Stan Stockholm necklace on my Etsy site: www.coolclimates.etsy.com
It's not handspun yarn, but a necklace knit from Irish linen with many interesting beads. It seems to have drawn a lot of positive attention.

If you were to make a self portrait in yarn, what would it look like?

Hmm, that's interesting. I would most likely incorporate greens, teal and coral/salmon as those are my favorite colors. It would be bulky and full of texture, changeable. It would most likely have several plies and novelty items such as beads to bring out the complexity in my personality. I consider myself to be a very outgoing and extroverted person, so the yarn would be showy. But it would also have darker, more private elements. I might add little bits of knitting (since I love knitting) and small souvineers or found objects from places that I've traveled that would have great meaning to me. I also love to bake and cook, so it would be interesting to incorporate an element of food into the yarn, whether it be real physical food or something evoking it. I might even spin some of my own hair into it, which would literally be a part of "me" in there.

We're happy to be giving away a beautiful handspun skein of Rachel Suntop's art yarn called "Deep Tropics". Please visit her shop, find something you like, and post about it below. We'll be drawing for a winner on Friday (barring any inland hurricanes). Remember, I will count your plurks, tweets, facebook, Ravelry posts and blogs as extra entries!

Thank you so much, Rachel, for sharing a little bit about yourself! We always enjoy your artful samples!

Storm Damage-edit

Hello,
I am Jessie's sister, Jill.  She asked me to post here to let you all know about yesterday's devastating storm.  Jessie and her family are fine and no serious damage was done to their home.  There are trees down everywhere and power is out.  The utility companies are working feverishly to get everything back to normal, but there may not be power when the next shipment of boxes goes out.  Rest assured, Jessie has lots of help.  Boxes will still go on sale as planned, whether they have power or not.  Sale time notices will go out early this coming week.  The video this month may encounter a few hiccups, but they will do their best.  Be assured, Jessie and Phat Fiber are fine...just a little shaken up.  Thanks for understanding.

Sunday afternoon there was some clearing of trees and branches in front of Jessie's house.  They really had a close call. The roads in were blocked and power lines are down all around.  She wants me to tell you all that she is encouraged and emotionally uplifted by all of your thoughts, comments, and prayers.  She hopes to find somewhere today or tomorrow with internet so that she can send out sale notices.

Tactile Fiber Arts and *Giveaway*

It's raining again today. Sometimes it gets to me this time of year, all the rain and the clouds. I think it gets to other people too, folks don't seem to act right come springtime. This morning while prepping for this post, some half-wit drove his pickup through my side yard, rutting up all the grass. I find the older I get, the more I can't handle little disturbances like this. I marched outside and pointed my finger with my hand on my hips and told him he'd better move his truck out of my yard and he'd better hope I get a second cup of coffee before I come out to see what damage he's done.
Enter Tactile's beautiful site and gorgeous fiber. I felt calm wash over me and my mood has instantly changed. They have a beautiful slide show on their front page and everyone should book mark it for instances like mine, when you need a virtual fiber fix!
I'm going to admit, before I encountered Tactile Fiber Arts wonderful goods, I had misconceptions about naturally dyed yarns and fiber. My past experiences were of dull and faded looking yarns that were not colorfast. That is certainly not the case with Tactile's fiber and yarn! Everything that has been submitted for the sampler has looked rich, deeply saturated and just plain beautiful!
Maia and MissyB take extreme care in selecting quality materials that have low environmental impact. Their hand dye ingredients are sourced globally to ensure they are not only safe for the earth, but socially responsible as well. I am beguiled by the quality of their fibers, which truly live up to the name Tactile, as they are very squishable!
I'm overwhelmingly excited to be hosting a Tactile giveaway! 2oz of precious tussah silk in their "Dew" colorway!! This stuff is so soft and rich and creamy- delightful! Please visit Tactile Fiber Arts and find something you'd like to write about below here. I will draw for a winner on Friday. Get your friends to join the fun, by ravelating (ravelry), twittering, plurking or facebook! I'll count you extra times if you do.
Maia and MissyB you ladies are inspirational role models for those of us striving to lead a more natural way of life. Thank you for letting us choose your yarn and fiber as a small step toward that goal! We look forward to future submissions to the box!

Kate is so generous, and sent in an absolutely gorgeous skein of her "Sea Wool" in the "English Garden" Colorway to be given away. This is very very soft and squishable, and has a subtle sheen to it. Rich olive vines, tea roses and antique golds flow through this 380 yd hank.

My 8 Kids Mom and *Giveaway*

I couldn't think of a better shop to feature today, as wee kick off Mom's week, than My8kidsMom ! While doing my usual 'research' about Rachel's shop, I read her profile and laughed out loud- She says in her spare time, she likes to create! Spare time? She owns a sheep farm (registered Cormo, Finn and Jacob sheep) and is raising and homeschooling 8 kids! Now, being a Mom of 2, I cannot even get my brain around having 8 children, but she manages to have spare time to craft?! She must be made up of that extra super mom material, that resilient yet tender supernatural stuff that just a few really special women are made of.
Rachel and her farm are gearing up for their shearing day! Check out her group on Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/groups/my8kidsmom-on-etsy and her fun blog: www.my8kidsmomgetscrafty.com
And in celebration of Rachel, we're giving away 3.3 oz of her merino/tencel blend spinning fiber in the "Winterberries" colorway! Just visit her shop, find something you like, and write about it below here. We'll be drawing for the giveaways on Friday, so you've got a lot of time to scope it out. Remember, I will count your twittering, plurking, facebooking and ravelating as extra entries, so help get the word out about this wonderful shop!
Thank you so much, Rachel for all your hard work, and for being a part of Phat Fiber!

Teresa stocks her shop with beautiful sock yarns and scrumptious spinning ingredients. Teresa has shops on both Etsy and Artfire and both are stocked with beautifully dyed fibers and yarn. In February, we sampled her "Twinkle toes" sock yarn and I heard many recipents rave about it!
My favorite Teresa Levite Studios sample submission was her green- dyed soy silk! So soft, and the color was both fresh and classic!
